I had a fantastic time photographing this sweetheart over the weekend! It's hard to believe that it's been 6 months already!! Miss Lynlee was SUCH a good sport for her 6 month session. Between her Mommy's ideas (I just LOVE it when my clients come with a vision, too!!) and my own, she was changed and moved around constantly. But she did GREAT!!

Snapshot Savvy Tip | Day 3

Day 3~

This tip goes against what most of us would imagine. Why in the world would you deliberately turn on a camera flash when you have plenty of natural sunlight to use?! Well, natural sunlight is wonderful, my favorite lighting! But, depending on the time of day you are taking a photograph, even the brightest of days will leave you with dark, harsh shadows. Use the flash in bright sunlight to lighten dark shadows under the eyes and nose, especially when the sun is directly overhead or behind the subject. Use it on cloudy days to brighten up faces and make them stand out from the background. By simply adding your camera's flash (nothing fancy is necessary), you are creating a "fill flash" effect, which brightens the subject and turns it into a more professional-looking image.

Day 2 ~

As you can see from these examples, even the most beautiful of backgrounds can totally distract from your subject. Though both images are perfectly acceptable images, it's obvious that a little re-adjusting of the background area and getting closer to the subject made this simple image into a wall-worthy portrait.

This is an easy hint that is often overlooked, especially while photographing small children or pets.  At any given photo shoot, you will most likely find me at one time or another lying flat on the ground in order to get eye level with the little cuties that I'm photographing.  Don't worry about looking silly...the image results are totally worth the funny looks you may get while taking the picture.

Several months ago, I was given the opportunity to speak at Somerville Baptist Church's Ladies Enrichment Retreat. What did I speak on, you ask? Marsha Barton Photography is excited to be kicking off its first "Senior Rep." program for the Class of 2013, and YOU could score BIG!!

We are looking for fun, outgoing students who are currently juniors in high school that are interested in becoming senior portrait representatives to help promote Marsha Barton Photography to their friends and classmates. If you are currently a high school junior or know a high school junior who might like this incredible opportunity, here’s what you need to know:

In order to be a senior representative for Marsha Barton Photography, you must:

Have great style, lots of personality, and enjoy being in front of the camera
Be a current high school junior graduating in 2013
Be available to have your mini session completed before May 1st, 2012
Agree to tell your friends, family, and classmates about Marsha Barton Photography and show them your favorite senior portraits
Pass out referral cards to anyone you think would be interested, especially classmates
Have your parents or legal guardians sign our portrait agreement/model release form
Agree to represent only Marsha Barton Photography (with the exception of formal yearbook portraits) and use these images as your senior portraits

As part of our senior representative program, you will receive the following:

Two complimentary photo sessions – a mini session in March or April 2012 and a full senior session in summer or fall 2012 – with unlimited clothing changes
50 personalized rep cards & 25 Senior 411 cards to give to friends and classmates
10% discount on all print/product orders
Sneak peek images posted to Facebook within 48 hours of session
A special blog post about you featuring the best of your session images
Opportunities to earn special referral incentives

Referral Incentives
With 1-4 referrals: $15 Amazon card & $15 print/product credit
With 5-8 referrals: $25 Visa card & 2 accordion mini albums
With 9+ referrals: Kindle FIRE & high resolution image disk (copyright released!)

When your referrals book any PAID full session (senior, family, newborn, maternity, engagement, etc.) and bring in your rep card, you will receive the above mentioned incentives. Our Senior Representatives aren’t the only winners. All referred clients will receive a $25 print credit when they submit your Rep Card with a paid session.

Some FAQ’s…
If I get picked, how do I spread the word? I will provide you with free custom-designed senior rep cards & 411 cards using photos from your mini shoot to hand out to friends for showing off your session images. The rest is up to you! Is there a bulletin board in the back of the restaurant where you work? Ask your boss if you can slap a card up there. Have a Facebook page? Make a photo album with the low-resolution images you will be provided with following your mini shoot and link to my website. Are you active in the community or a school group? Pass the word along to your peers. The more you can promote, the better for YOU!

When would you do my portrait session? We will schedule a short (30 min - 1 hour) mini session in March or April of 2012 in order to get photos for your 411 cards and rep cards. All mini sessions must be completed by May 1, 2012. I will then provide you with rep cards, 411 cards, and several low resolution digital files by mid-May so that you may begin spreading the word before school lets out for summer vacation. Then, we will schedule a longer full portrait session for summer or fall 2012 (by November).

How many representatives will you select from each area school? I will select up to 2 reps from any of the local area schools. All applicants will be notified by late February 2012 of the status of their application.

Do you also take the formal (drape/tux) portraits? I do not currently take the formal portraits, as most schools photograph these with particular companies/photographers for uniformity. If you need formal portraits to be taken, please contact me to discuss options.

When is the application deadline? I will be collecting applications until February 15th, 2011 from anyone wanting to be considered as one of my representatives.

I can't think of a better time for family portraits than around the Thanksgiving holidays, when all of the family comes together to celebrate and thank the Lord for all that He has blessed them with. This sweet family was one of my two major sessions during this beautiful Thanksgiving. I can't truthfully say that I wasn't at least a little nervous of how a session with 21 people would go, but I had a great time with this family! There were nothing but happy smiles and attitudes during our entire session, which makes my job so much easier. Here are a few favorites from this extended family session. The hardest part was choosing only a few to show in the sneak peek!!

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree | Wee Wockin Style

I would like to introduce you to my new favorite photography prop, courtesy of Wee Wockin', LLC...

Isn't this the most adorable child rocking chair that you've ever laid eyes on??

Having a home-based photography studio, I am very picky when it comes to choosing props (especially large ones) to add to my collection. After all, I do have to find a suitable place to store it, when it isn't in use. One of my favorite things to do, is to find a prop that doubles as normal-life accessories. Though that isn't a common occurrence, it is fantastic when it happens! This totally happened with this amazing rocker!

I was able to choose my own fabric, which I loved doing! I chose to have my chair look more "adult-like", but "kid-sized". It totally coordinates with my living room design/decor (so I don't feel that I need to hide it in the playroom whenever guests or clients are coming over), but it also works with practically every season of the year (making it nothing short of perfect for an infant/child photographer!).

After getting a tour of the Wee Wockin' workshop, I knew these chairs were made to last a lifetime (and maybe even longer!). Ken and Barb Hill, owners of Wee Wockin', put their superb quality workmanship, attention to detail, and design in each and every chair. I "shopped" around to see if there were other chairs comparable to these, and found nothing close to their quality, detail, & design, or their price!

I am sure it goes without saying, but as soon as my new photography prop entered our home, we immediately had a problem...we had two kids wanting it! Needless to say, a 2nd Wee Wockin' chair is in our family's near future (as soon as I can decide what I want it upholstered in!!).

Need a great heirloom Christmas idea for your child/grandchild? Looking for a fantastic new photography prop? I really don't imagine you finding anything to beat Wee Wockin' and their adorable rocking chairs! And, if you're still a little unsure, come by and check mine out! I was overjoyed when I recently got the call about photographing a sweet new addition to a dear family I know. This little {5 week old} man was a photographer's dream of newborn clients...he let me do just about anything with him, with little (if any) whines. He even gave me a sweet baby grin within the first minutes of our session (totally unheard of!)

After taking indoor pictures (as is typical for newborn sessions), we also went outside for a few great family shots.

We Will NEVER Forget...

Was given the opportunity to photograph our church's (Somerville Baptist Church) 9/11 remembrance service yesterday morning. These are a couple of my pictures of the local firemen raising the American flag at the service. I am so thankful for all of those who risk their lives on a daily basis to keep my family and my country safe! We will NEVER forget 9/11, the sacrafices that were made, the lives that were lost, and the changes that came from it.

I had the wonderful opportunity of photographing this beautiful family recently. They just welcomed their third little gift from God into their family, and I was thankful to be able to capture those sweet moments with their family.

Our session was a little longer than normal (since we combined a newborn session with a family session), and it was extremely humid/hot...even at 8pm! But they were so fun to work with...so willing to do just about anything I suggested...which made for some fun shots!

With the new "digital age" we live in, I cannot tell you the times that I, as a professional photographer, have heard comments like:

"All you need to take good pictures now-a-day is a {insert name of model} camera."
"Anyone can take professional pictures in their own backyard now!"
"Why would I pay $X for professional photographs when {insert name} has a new camera and could take some for me?"

As a professional photographer, who has seen so many people put their faith in the above comments, only to come away with portraits that are less than desirable and unprofessional, those comments make me cringe. As a stay-at-home mom of two and avid couponer, I know the importance of saving every penny possible, but, because of my business, I also know the consequences of cutting the wrong corners to save money. Cutting corners often ends which little more than wasted time and money. In effort to help you not make the same mistakes, I would like to offer you my "Guide to choosing the right photographer for YOU" {requires Adobe Reader to download PDF file}.

This guide is not a new "advertising" technique to tell you that I'm the only photographer to fit your needs now and forever. Every photographer is different in their style, techniques, and talent. Every client has a different vision/goal/style they expecting from their session. My goal is that by reading this guide, you will know how to choose the photographer that meets and exceeds each of your desires/needs, and will give you memories perfectly captured for a lifetime of enjoyment. I do not want anyone to book with Marsha Barton Photography that is not 100% sure that I am the best photographer for them. I think you should have absolute confidence in whomever you have chosen to capture life.

Why is this important??

This day in time, it is not uncommon to see almost everyone with some sort of digital point & shoot or SLR camera. With the overabundance of digital cameras and editing software, it's not surprising that offers to take portraits, (some amateurs, some businesses, some hobby photographers) are spreading like wildfire.

With so many choices, how do you choose the photographer that will meet your specific needs and expectations? Can you safely choose by who will give you the most for your investment? How about specials, availability, or referrals?

Portraits {whether capturing the first breaths of life, the first looks of love, the first steps on life's journey, or the closeness of a family} take time to plan and capture. You need someone that can capture those precious moments the right way, the first time. Those precious moments, once gone, cannot be repeated.

Decide your budget and style

Do you prefer a modern or classic look? Are you looking for a photojournalistic style? Do you like outdoor our indoor studio looks? Many photographers have a distinct look...does the photographer you are considering match the look you would like hanging on your wall? Look online for inspiration! In addition to style, prices will vary with each photographer. Of course, lower priced photographers will give you the opportunity to purchase more prints, where a higher end photographer will spend more time offering interior design work for custom art perfect for your home. Most importantly, do not choose based solely on price. Be sure you know the photographer's work and style, so you know what to expect to receive with your session.

Look at websites and portfolios carefully

After narrowing down your list of photographers that have the style and price that you like, carefully consider the remaining photographers by looking at their websites and portfolios. Do they have {a legitimate} business? How long have they had their business? Do they have good experience with the type of photography you are searching for? Is their website professional {this is often an indicator their level of business/service}?

As a general rule, most photographers will often display their best work on their websites to attract potential clients. If you don't like what you see, the chances are high that you would not be pleased with their work for your session. Do they offer the products/specialty products you are looking for? If you aren't sure if they do a certain style that you are looking for, be sure to ask them {ask for examples, too}!

When looking at portfolios, be certain to look for the following factors:

naturally posed photographs {do those in the picture appear comfortable and natural, or were they haphazardly posed; does the photograph show expressions of personality}
creative variety {are all photographs using the same simple poses, or do you see creative ideas used with each sample session shown}
professional lighting {professional photographers will have consistent lighting throughout their portfolios...no harsh shadows on the subjects, as one example}
professional editing {are the photographs edited in a way that accentuate the subject with lighting, clarity, correction, color tone, etc., or do they show harsh, unrealistic tones, blurs, overlooked imperfections, etc.}

Remember, establishing a relationship and communicating your desires/goals in your upcoming session is the best step to successfully finding the perfect photographer for you. Snapshots are a great asset to preserve many family memories, but professional photographs will and should stand apart from all others, regardless of what camera or software is used. Be certain you know what you want and what you will get from your chosen photographer, then sit back and relax, enjoying those moments in life timelessly captured.

Frozen Contentment

In trying to choose which picture to share in this week's I Heart Faces {theme - face from February}, I debated for quite a while. I immediately went to my February newborn/infant sessions, because who doesn't love a "fresh" face?! But the more I looked through my February pictures, the more I loved this one of my sweet Austin.

This was our last Alabama snow this winter {thus far, anyway}, and it was one bitter-cold day! As miserable as he was while out there, it just didn't seem right not to play in the snow, for at least a few minutes. I think you can see the bitter-coldness of the day all over this picture...especially in his face. No cheesing...no playful smiles...just that look of {albeit frozen} contentment of being in the snow on such a bitter-cold day!

Megan ~ Sneak Peek

I had the opportunity of "using" my youngest sister as a model over the weekend, and we had a blast! Her sweet/smart personality met her funky/laid back personality, which made for a great session. Here are a few of my favorites. This session gave me a chance to play around with the lighting/exposure, and find a few new favorite techniques, as you'll see below.

Leah, Lora, Blake, & Sophia {Sneak Peek}

This past weekend was fun! I was able to photograph three siblings, their spouses, and their young children/infants. It may have been a little crazy with all of the little ones...3 of which couldn't even sit up without help...but their little smiles and personalities brought joy to my heart and loads of pictures into my camera!

Houston & Maddox ~ Sneak Peek

Saturday I had the privilege of spending an hour of fun with two of the cutest little boys, Houston & Maddox. Houston {full of energy and spunk} and Maddox {full of nothing but the best smiles} gave me many picture perfect moments to capture during our time together, and here's a quick sneak peek of a few of those moments...

As their parents call it, they are a "house divided", at least in football terms, but you wouldn't know it as sweet as these brothers are to each other...

These were only a few of the first pictures I snapped...there are many more to go through and edit this week, and I can't wait! But this should suffice for a "sneak peek", right? ;-)

Myles + Angela, Engagement Session

Before our move, I was asked to take a few engagement portraits of my brother-in-law and his sweet fiance' {my future sis-in-law!}. In case you missed them, I did portraits for them a few months prior to their engagement, which you can see here.

Here are a few of my favorites from their engagement session. I love seeing and capturing how comfortable they are with each other, and how much fun they have together, even when there's a camera in their faces! Hope you enjoy the sneak peek...

Cuties in Camo

Last weekend, I was able to take new pictures of the sweet twins, Lora and Leah, now at almost 3 months old. This photo session was for two reasons in particular:

Mimi's Babies made these adorable "girly" camo hats for me to give them as a shower gift, and I promised I'd take pictures when they grew into them.
I wanted to get more experience with twin babies - it's hard work and GREAT learning - while giving their parents updated pictures of these two cuties in camo!

So, without further adue, here are a few of my favorites. Don't let their cuteness fool you...they challenged me majorly this go round! When one was happy, one was screaming...when one was awake, one slept...when I had one posed to photograph, she screamed while the other sat quietly (until it was her turn to pose, then they switched roles). But through all of the normal baby issues {times two}, I still think we ended up with great results! What do you think??

I've been so busy the past couple of weeks working on the house and keeping it practically spotless at any given moment {gotta love that part of selling a house}, that I haven't had much time to enjoy my photography. So today, I took a few minutes to walk outside and capture pictures of my favorite tigerlilies.

Oh, how I love those flowers...I wait all spring waiting for them to bloom, and the bloom only lasts for a short time...but it is always so worth the wait!
